Putting the planets where they are tonight…

Every planet, moon, dwarf planet and spacecraft here is drawn where it really is right now, worked out from NASA JPL orbit data. Run time forwards or backwards with the bar at the bottom.

Titan

A moon with thick orange air, rain and seas. Of methane.

Titan is the only moon with a thick atmosphere. Its air is even thicker than Earth's, and mostly nitrogen, like ours.

It's the only other place we know with rain, rivers and seas on the surface. But at −179 °C, they're made of methane and ethane, not water.

In 2005 the Huygens probe parachuted down through the orange haze and landed. It's still the most distant landing humans have ever made.

NASA is sending a flying drone called Dragonfly, due to arrive in the 2030s and hop from place to place.

If you stood here

Thick air and low gravity together: strap wings to your arms and you could fly. The sky is a dim orange haze.

Quick answers+

How big is Titan?

Titan is 5,149 km wide, about 40% of Earth's width.

How long does Titan take to go round Saturn?

Titan goes once round Saturn every 16 days. It spins once in the same time, so it always shows Saturn the same face.

How hot or cold is Titan?

−179 °C.

What is the gravity like on Titan?

Gravity is 1.352 m/s², 14% of Earth's. Someone who weighs 70 kg on Earth would weigh 10 kg there.
