Why rise and set times need your location

Most “planets tonight” articles give one set of times and leave it there. But a planet rising at 9 PM in London is not rising at 9 PM in Chicago, and at high latitudes the difference stretches to hours rather than minutes.

Longitude decides when your part of the Earth turns to face a given piece of sky, and latitude decides how high above your horizon it climbs once it gets there. Both matter, so the tool asks for a place and computes from the planet’s real position rather than approximating from a published table.

How to actually find them

  • Face the direction given above. A planet low in the west sets within a couple of hours — that one is a right-now-or-never. One high in the south will be there all evening.
  • Look for the steady one. In a patch of twinkling stars, the light that sits perfectly still is a planet. This is reliable enough that you can use it from a city.
  • Venus is unmistakable. It is brighter than every star in the sky by a wide margin, and it never strays far from sunrise or sunset. If something startlingly bright is low in the dusk or pre-dawn, it is Venus.
  • Mars looks orange. Not red, despite the name — a warm amber that stands out once you notice it.
  • Jupiter beats every star but Venus. Steady, white, and high for much of the night when it is in season. Binoculars will show you its four big moons as a line of dots.
  • Mercury is the hard one. It never gets far from the Sun, so it only appears briefly in twilight, low down. Plenty of experienced observers have never knowingly seen it.

Planetary alignments, without the hype

Every few months a headline announces a rare planetary alignment. What it almost always means is that several planets are visible in the same stretch of sky at the same time — which is common, not rare, and has nothing to do with them lining up in space.

They look strung out along a line because they orbit in roughly the same plane, so from Earth they all appear on the same great circle across the sky. The tool above is the honest version of that headline: if it shows three or four planets up at once from where you are, you have your alignment. If it shows one, no article can change that.

Which planets are up changes through the night and through the year, so an answer written in an article is out of date almost immediately. This one is computed the moment you load it.

What time do the planets rise and set tonight?

Rise and set times are latitude- and longitude-dependent, which is why the tool asks where you are. Two cities in the same country can differ by an hour or more, and the further you are from the equator the bigger the spread gets. The times shown are local to the place you set, computed from the planet’s real position rather than a table.

One deliberate difference from most tables: the window above is when a planet is above your horizon and the sky is dark, not its raw rise and set. Those are often in daylight — Mercury regularly rises before dawn and sets in the afternoon, standing highest at midday — and a time you cannot possibly see it is not an answer.

Which planets can you see without a telescope?

Five: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. They have been known since antiquity for exactly that reason — they are bright enough to see with nothing but your eyes, and they visibly move against the stars.

Uranus sits right at the edge of naked-eye visibility under a perfect sky, and Neptune is beyond it. Neither is listed above, because calling them “visible tonight” would be misleading for almost everyone.

How do I tell a planet from a star?

Planets shine with a steady light; stars twinkle. That is the quickest test in the field, and it works because a star is effectively a point source that the atmosphere can smear, while a planet is a tiny disc that averages the turbulence out.

Planets also keep to a narrow band across the sky — the ecliptic — and Mars is visibly orange while Venus is simply brighter than anything else up there. The identification guide goes through it properly.

What is a planetary alignment, really?

Usually it means several planets appearing in the same stretch of sky at once. They are not lining up in space — they just happen to be on the same side of the Sun from our point of view, so they string out along the ecliptic.
