Father's Day Gift Ideas

The sky over the night he became a dad.

Most Father’s Day gift ideas fall into three piles: tools, grilling gadgets, and socks with a joke on them. He will say he loves all three.

A star map is different. It is the night sky over one exact place on one exact night, and for a dad the night is obvious: the one his first child was born, when he stopped being just a guy and became somebody’s father.

Here is how to pick the night, what to do for a first Father’s Day or a dad-to-be, and how it works for his birthday or Christmas too.

Quick answer
  • Use the night you were born, or his first child's birth night, over the town where it happened. It is the night he became a dad.
  • For a first Father's Day, use the baby's birth night and sign it from the baby. It is the gift most new dads never expect.
  • It is a digital download with no shipping cutoff, so it also works for his birthday, Christmas, or a Father's Day you remembered on Saturday.

Why a star map suits Father’s Day

Dads are famously impossible to buy for. Ask what he wants and you get “nothing”, and this time he often means it.

That is the point of a star map. It is not a thing he needs, it is a night he remembers, and nobody else could have given him that sky.

It also lets you say something sentimental without either of you having to talk about feelings. For a lot of fathers, that is exactly the right amount.

Which night to choose

The place is usually obvious. The night is where you get to be clever, and there are a few good options.

The night you were born

The classic. It is your birthday, but it is also the night he held you for the first time, and he remembers it better than you do.

Use the town you were born in and the date on your birth certificate. The time helps but is not essential.

His first child’s birth night

If you are not the eldest, the strongest version may be your oldest sibling’s birth night. That is the night he actually became a dad.

Better still, go in together as siblings and make a set, one print per child. It fills a hallway and keeps anyone from feeling left out.

A night that was all his

Some dads would rather it wasn’t about the kids at all. Try the night he was born, his wedding night, or the night his team finally won the thing.

That last one is not a joke. A star map of a championship night over the stadium is a genuinely good dad gift.

For a dad who is no longer here

Father’s Day can be a rough day. A map of a night you shared, or the night he was born, can be a quiet way to mark it for yourself.

We wrote about that in memorial star maps.

For a first Father's Day, the baby's birth night is the obvious sky. Many end up in the nursery rather than his study.

Who you’re buying for

First Father’s Day gift ideas from the baby

This is the big one. A new dad’s first Father’s Day is usually organised by his partner, with the baby named as the sender.

Use the baby’s birth night and the town where the baby was born. Sign it from the baby, and let him pretend he isn’t welling up.

If the nursery is still being decorated, it can hang there. See our guide to birth star maps for the nursery.

A dad-to-be

For a father whose baby hasn’t arrived yet, use the night you found out. The positive test, the first scan, or the night you told him.

“The night we found out about you” is a hard line to read with dry eyes. Then you make the birth-night one next year.

A dad who has everything

The man with a garage full of tools and a drawer full of socks is exactly who this is for. He genuinely does not own this.

Dark palettes suit most dads’ spaces, a study, a den or a garage wall. Go bigger than you think, around 18×24.

Grandfathers

One small print per grandchild, each on its birth night, lined up along a shelf. It is the kind of thing grandfathers show every visitor.

A stepdad

Pick a date that belongs to you both: the night he married your mom, or the night you first met him. It says the relationship counts without making a speech of it.

“He will say he wants nothing. A star map of the night he became a dad is the one Father's Day gift he can't already own.”

The practical bits

What to write on it

The date and place are fixed. The two lines of words are where you get to be you.

  • “The night you became my dad”
  • “Your first Father’s Day” with the baby’s birth date
  • “The night we found out about you” for a dad-to-be
  • “Worth staying up for” for the championship version
  • “Where it all began” for a grandfather’s set

You can put in the date and town and see the real sky with your own words before you pay anything.

Colour and size

Most dads lean towards the dark designs: near-black, deep navy, or the compass ring. They sit well in a study, beside a bookshelf, or on a garage wall.

If it is going in the nursery for a first Father’s Day, the soft cream designs suit a baby’s room better. Nobody will mind that it isn’t technically his room.

On size, bigger than you think. A 12×16 disappears on a big wall, and 18×24 is the comfortable middle.

Finding the date and time

Your own birth date is easy. The time is usually on the long-form birth certificate, and your mom almost certainly remembers it to the minute.

For a championship night or a wedding, a quick search or an old photo will give you the date. The town is the venue’s town, not where you watched it from.

If you are asking around, keep it vague. “What time was I born again?” in May is suspicious enough already.

Framing and handing it over

A file is a strange thing to hand a man over breakfast. Print it and put it in a plain black or oak frame, and it becomes a present.

Most print shops will do it the same day. If you are short on time, a rolled print tied with string is honestly just as good.

What you actually get

One purchase gives you twelve files, so he can print whatever size suits the wall.

  • Four print files, from 8×10 up to 24×36, at full print quality
  • Six phone, tablet and desktop wallpapers of the same sky
  • Two square and story-shaped versions for sharing

Dads who swear they don’t care about phone wallpapers tend to change theirs within the hour.

Timing

In the US, Canada and the UK, Father’s Day is the third Sunday in June. In Australia and New Zealand it is the first Sunday in September.

Either way, there is no shipping deadline. The files arrive by email in about ten minutes, and most print shops will print and frame it the same day.

A set for the whole family

If there are several kids, a matching set is hard to beat. Same design, one print per child, each on its own birth night.

It also solves the eternal sibling problem of whose gift was better. Nobody wins, and he gets all of them.

When grandchildren arrive, the set just keeps growing along the hallway.

Not just for Father’s Day

Everything above works for his birthday, Christmas, or retirement. If you are looking for gifts for dad at any time of year, the birth-night map still wins.

For a retiring dad specifically, see our retirement gift ideas.

A night he was there for

It is tempting to treat this as a nice poster. It is closer to a photo of a night nobody thought to photograph.

The stars on it are where they genuinely were over that town that night, worked out from real astronomical data. We explain how in are star maps accurate, and cover the basics in what is a star map.

He was probably pacing a hospital corridor under that sky. Now he gets to keep it.

FAQ

What is a meaningful Father's Day gift?

Something tied to a night only your family shares. A star map of the night you were born is one, because it is also the night he became your dad.

If he could have bought it himself, it probably says less than you want.

What is a good first Father's Day gift from the baby?

A star map of the baby’s birth night, over the town where the baby was born, signed from the baby. It marks the exact night he became a father.

What do you get a dad who has everything?

Something personal rather than practical. He can buy himself any tool, but he can’t buy the sky from the night you were born.

I don't know the time I was born. Does it matter?

Not much. An evening sky on the right date and in the right town is what most people choose anyway.

The time is usually on the birth certificate if you want to be exact.

Is it too late to order for Father's Day?

Almost never. It is a digital download that arrives in about ten minutes, so even the night before works if you can get it printed in the morning.

I started SkyWhen because the sky on the night something mattered is, in a real sense, the only one of its kind — and almost nobody keeps it.

Wedding photos get framed. Voice notes get saved. The sky that watched all of it gets nothing. I wanted to fix that.
