Is the Geminids shower visible tonight?

The countdown above answers this directly. If the peak is days away it tells you how many; if it is tonight, it gives you the hour. Most showers stay active for days or weeks either side of the peak at lower rates, so “not peak night” is not the same as “nothing to see.”

What decides your night more than the date is your latitude. The radiant has to be above your horizon for you to see anything at all, and how high it climbs sets how many meteors you get. What the Geminids actually are

By every measure that matters the Geminids beat the Perseids. Rates are higher — 120 to 150 an hour at peak against 100. The meteors are brighter, and they move slowly enough at 35 kilometres per second that you can actually follow one across the sky rather than catching a flick at the edge of vision. Many show colour: yellows, greens, the occasional blue.

The Geminids also have the friendliest schedule of any major shower. The radiant rises in the early evening, so you can see meteors from about 9 or 10 PM instead of waiting for the small hours. That single fact makes this the one shower you can reasonably watch with children.

The parent body is strange. Every other major shower comes from a comet; the Geminids come from 3200 Phaethon, an asteroid that passes closer to the Sun than Mercury and sheds dust when it does. Astronomers call it a rock comet. It also means the stream is relatively young — the Geminids were not recorded before the 1860s, and they have been strengthening ever since.

At 23% illumination the moon is a minor nuisance rather than a problem, and it sets or rises partway through the night, leaving a clean window either side.

Moonlight is the variable that most often decides whether a shower is memorable or merely fine, and it changes completely from year to year. How to watch

December in the northern hemisphere is the trade-off: the best shower of the year happens on the coldest nights. Dress far warmer than feels necessary, because the difference between a great Geminid night and a short one is entirely how long you can stay lying still outside.

  • Get away from light. This matters more than equipment, more than timing, more than anything else. The dark-sky parks guide lists the nearest genuinely dark spots in most regions.
  • Use no telescope. Meteors cross tens of degrees of sky in a second. Binoculars and telescopes make it worse, not better — your own eyes have the only wide enough field.
  • Give it twenty minutes. Dark adaptation is chemical and slow, and one glance at a phone screen resets it. Most people who say they saw nothing left before their eyes were working.
  • Look away from the radiant. Meteors appear all over the sky. Those closest to Gemini are heading towards you and appear as short stubs; the long dramatic streaks are 40 to 60 degrees away from it.
  • Lie down. A reclining chair or a blanket beats standing and craning, and you can hold the pose for the hour it takes to see a shower properly.

The headline figure of 120 to 150 an hour is the zenithal hourly rate — what a single observer would count under a perfectly dark sky with the radiant directly overhead. Almost nobody gets those conditions.

Which direction should I look for the Geminids?

The radiant is in Gemini, near the bright star Castor, but you should not stare at it. Meteors near the radiant are coming almost straight at you and appear as short stubs; the long streaks appear well away from it.

The practical answer is to face the darkest part of your sky, take in as much of it as you can, and let the meteors find you.

Do I need a telescope or binoculars?

No — and they actively hurt. A meteor crosses a large piece of sky in under a second, so any instrument that narrows your field of view makes you less likely to catch one. Unaided eyes are the correct equipment.
