Is the Perseids shower visible tonight?
The countdown above answers this directly. If the peak is days away it tells you how many; if it is tonight, it gives you the hour. Most showers stay active for days or weeks either side of the peak at lower rates, so “not peak night” is not the same as “nothing to see.”
What decides your night more than the date is your latitude. The radiant has to be above your horizon for you to see anything at all, and how high it climbs sets how many meteors you get. What the Perseids actually are
The Perseids are the most-watched meteor shower in the world, and the reason is as much weather as astronomy. They peak in mid-August, when the northern hemisphere has its warmest, most comfortable nights, so you can lie outside for two hours without freezing. The Geminids in December are objectively better and get a fraction of the audience.
Rates run up to a hundred an hour under a dark sky at peak. Perseid meteors are fast, hitting the atmosphere at around 59 kilometres per second, and a good fraction of them are bright enough to leave a persistent train — a faint glowing line that lingers for a second after the streak.
The parent comet, Swift-Tuttle, is a genuine monster: a 26-kilometre nucleus on a 133-year orbit, last seen in 1992. It is the largest object that makes repeated close passes to Earth. It is not going to hit us, but the arithmetic of that is closer than anyone would prefer.
The moon in 2027
At 85% illumination the moon is a real problem this year — it drowns out all but the brightest meteors. Your best chance is the part of the night before it rises or after it sets.
Moonlight is the variable that most often decides whether a shower is memorable or merely fine, and it changes completely from year to year. This read is calculated from the moon’s actual position at the coming peak using the same engine that draws the star maps, so it stays right as the years roll over. How to watch
The radiant is up all night from northern latitudes and climbs through the small hours, so rates build steadily towards dawn. The peak is broad — you'll see good numbers for two or three nights either side, which makes this the most forgiving shower to plan around.
- Get away from light. This matters more than equipment, more than timing, more than anything else. The dark-sky parks guide lists the nearest genuinely dark spots in most regions.
- Use no telescope. Meteors cross tens of degrees of sky in a second. Binoculars and telescopes make it worse, not better — your own eyes have the only wide enough field.
- Give it twenty minutes. Dark adaptation is chemical and slow, and one glance at a phone screen resets it. Most people who say they saw nothing left before their eyes were working.
- Look away from the radiant. Meteors appear all over the sky. Those closest to Perseus are heading towards you and appear as short stubs; the long dramatic streaks are 40 to 60 degrees away from it.
- Lie down. A reclining chair or a blanket beats standing and craning, and you can hold the pose for the hour it takes to see a shower properly.

The headline figure of up to 100 an hour is the zenithal hourly rate — what a single observer would count under a perfectly dark sky with the radiant directly overhead. Almost nobody gets those conditions.

Which direction should I look for the Perseids?
The radiant is in Perseus, but you should not stare at it. Meteors near the radiant are coming almost straight at you and appear as short stubs; the long streaks appear well away from it.
The practical answer is to face the darkest part of your sky, take in as much of it as you can, and let the meteors find you.
Do I need a telescope or binoculars?
No — and they actively hurt. A meteor crosses a large piece of sky in under a second, so any instrument that narrows your field of view makes you less likely to catch one. Unaided eyes are the correct equipment.
