Is the Orionids shower visible tonight?
The countdown above answers this directly. If the peak is days away it tells you how many; if it is tonight, it gives you the hour. Most showers stay active for days or weeks either side of the peak at lower rates, so “not peak night” is not the same as “nothing to see.”
What decides your night more than the date is your latitude. The radiant has to be above your horizon for you to see anything at all, and how high it climbs sets how many meteors you get. What the Orionids actually are
The Orionids are the Eta Aquariids' other half: the same Halley debris, met on the other side of Earth's orbit. Rates are lower, around twenty an hour, but the geometry is much friendlier — the radiant sits near the celestial equator, so it climbs to a useful height from almost anywhere on Earth.
These are among the fastest meteors we see, entering the atmosphere at roughly 66 kilometres per second. Fast meteors tend to be bright and to leave trains, and the Orionids produce a good share of fireballs for a shower of their size.
The radiant sits just above Betelgeuse, in one of the most recognisable patches of sky there is. If you can find Orion's belt, you're looking in the right direction — though as always, the meteors themselves show up all over the sky.
The moon in 2026
At 82% illumination the moon is a real problem this year — it drowns out all but the brightest meteors. Your best chance is the part of the night before it rises or after it sets.
Moonlight is the variable that most often decides whether a shower is memorable or merely fine, and it changes completely from year to year. This read is calculated from the moon’s actual position at the coming peak using the same engine that draws the star maps, so it stays right as the years roll over. How to watch
Orion rises late in the evening and stands high after midnight, so the second half of the night is the window. The peak is broad and shallow: expect similar rates for several nights running rather than one dramatic spike.
- Get away from light. This matters more than equipment, more than timing, more than anything else. The dark-sky parks guide lists the nearest genuinely dark spots in most regions.
- Use no telescope. Meteors cross tens of degrees of sky in a second. Binoculars and telescopes make it worse, not better — your own eyes have the only wide enough field.
- Give it twenty minutes. Dark adaptation is chemical and slow, and one glance at a phone screen resets it. Most people who say they saw nothing left before their eyes were working.
- Look away from the radiant. Meteors appear all over the sky. Those closest to Orion are heading towards you and appear as short stubs; the long dramatic streaks are 40 to 60 degrees away from it.
- Lie down. A reclining chair or a blanket beats standing and craning, and you can hold the pose for the hour it takes to see a shower properly.

Which direction should I look for the Orionids?
The radiant is in Orion, near the red star Betelgeuse, but you should not stare at it. Meteors near the radiant are coming almost straight at you and appear as short stubs; the long streaks appear well away from it.
The practical answer is to face the darkest part of your sky, take in as much of it as you can, and let the meteors find you.
Do I need a telescope or binoculars?
No — and they actively hurt. A meteor crosses a large piece of sky in under a second, so any instrument that narrows your field of view makes you less likely to catch one. Unaided eyes are the correct equipment.
